TJ Maxwell is an electric wing with a high basketball IQ and a fearless approach to the game. His blend of crafty athleticism and explosive movements makes him a constant threat on the floor. Whether he’s slashing to the rim with authority or stretching the defense with his smooth shooting touch, he finds ways to put pressure on opponents. TJ thrives at getting downhill, using his size and physicality to finish strong at the basket, while his ability to knock down shots from deep keeps defenders on edge. His aggressive motor on the boards allows him to rebound at a high level, and his vision enables him to make timely passes.
As just a sophomore, TJ is already making a huge impact as a starter on a strong varsity team. He’s averaging 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 35% from beyond the arc. His presence on the court has been undeniable, and in recent games, he has elevated his scoring to over 15 points per game, proving he can take on a greater offensive load when needed.
The biggest improvement from last season has been his defense and his ability to create better shot opportunities. Heading into the offseason, he is focused on improving his ball-handling skills and becoming a more dominant defensive force. After last season, his work ethic went to another level, fueling his development and setting the tone for his continued growth.
This AAU season, TJ will be playing for TN United, where his goals are to sharpen his skills and compete against elite competition. TJ's main goal is to keep pushing himself, gaining experience, and proving he belongs among the best. One of the tournaments he’s most excited for is NY2LA Stop 2 in Indianapolis, where he’ll have a chance to showcase his abilities on a big stage.
What fires TJ up the most on the court is hitting a clutch three. That moment when the ball swishes through the net and ignites his team and the crowd is what he lives for. But when adversity strikes, TJ handles it by blocking out the noise, puts his head down, and works harder. That mindset has carried him through tough moments, and it’s a trait that will continue to serve him well. The best advice he’s ever received is , “Keep your head down and keep working, no matter what happens or what is said.” That mentality has helped him push forward and elevate his game.
This season, his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. He was honored as the Underclassman Player of the Year, a testament to his dedication and the impact he’s already making at such a young age.
I assess that TJ’s combination of size, skill, and relentless work ethic makes him an enticing prospect for the next level. His ability to score at all three levels, combined with his dynamic athleticism and improving defensive presence, gives him a well-rounded game that can translate to higher levels of competition. TJ's growing confidence as a playmaker and shot-creator makes him even more dangerous, and as he continues to develop his handle and defense more, he will only become more complete as a player.
