Carter is the definition of a gritty, old-school big who earns his keep by finishing around the rim. With an array of crafty moves, including the hook shot, Carter is a punisher in the post but delivers with an efficient mid-range jumper. He gobbles up boards like candy and throws himself a block party as a relentless rim protector.
Last season, Carter showcased his talents by averaging 11 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 59.9% from the field, earning him 2nd Team All-Conference honors in the Heart of the North. He’s worked hard in the offseason to address his biggest areas for improvement: building strength and refining his dribbling. His goals are crystal clear—winning the sectional final, making a return to the state tournament, earning 1st Team All-Conference, and securing a spot on an All-State team. His most noticeable leap forward this year? A newfound ability to confidently shoot from range.
Carter's résumé is packed with achievements. He’s a three-time regional final champion, made it to state, and has been named All-Conference multiple times. But he thrives on competition, especially matchups like Cumberland, where a 6’10” D1-bound rival always brings a fierce challenge. From a team perspective, Ladysmith is the game circled on the schedule—it’s a battle for conference supremacy and often a playoff showdown. Carter believes his team has what it takes to make a deep tournament run, pointing to their tough defense, height, and undeniable heart.
What fuels Carter's fire most is seeing his teammates succeed, hitting momentum-changing shots, and throwing down dunks in-game. Handling adversity is another one of his strengths. When things go wrong, Carter takes a deep breath, resets, and focuses on the next play—a mentality his coach reinforces with consistent advice: "You're too good of a player to get down on yourself. Move on and get the next one."
The best advice Carter has ever received is to trust his teammates because greatness in basketball is a team effort. Off the court, Carter's interests reflect his down-to-earth personality. He enjoys fishing—so much so that he runs a YouTube channel called Cherney Fishing. He also loves hunting, golfing with his buddies, and spending quality time cooking with his mom.
As Carter looks toward playing at the next level, he understands the grind isn’t over. He’s determined to add muscle, improve his ball-handling, and keep building his game. While he’s unsure about which college division fits him best, he’s grateful for any opportunity to play. A few coaches have taken notice, inviting him to camps, and Carter remains hopeful that an offer is just around the corner.
I assess that this double-double machine can be a steal—an inside force who embraces the grunt work and thrives on physical dominance. Carter is hungry for a championship and leads his team with heart and purpose. Stay tuned.
